A major argument against the proposed increase in marine protection in the Hauraki Gulf is that it will simply increase pressure and drive fish stocks down in the surrounding areas. Available data and published literature provides strong evidence that these concerns regarding “displaced fishing effort” are likely overstated.

I recently heard that the mushy snapper phenomenon was due to them starving, is that correct? Is it due to the heatwaves? Cheers
So many marine threats, very important our generation really steps up on protection to avoid more local extinctions.

Make it a no take marine reserve, before it gets trawled into oblivion, the clock is ticking.!,
Only because the trawlers cant get into it with large rocks in the way.

Sediment pours into the Hauraki Gulf every time it rains. Some of that is natural, but a lot of it is because of how we're dealing (or not) with land-use practices which expose bare dirt. It's an urban problem, and a rural problem. And once it's in the Gulf, it is damn near impossible to get it out. Great article Alex! Here's hoping this legislation gets passed.
Completely agree Alex - great oped and time for action
So what's happened to all the marine reserves that were proposed?
Alex's article was also the first anniversary of Aucklands floods ...that masive sedimentation event plus the prolonged pumping of raw sewerage into the waitemata had a devastating effect on the sea bed ecology and the ability for all fish to feed within the inner gulf . Any number of marine protection areas will not solve that land-based problem which rests squarely in the hands of Auckland Council...which is also the principal member of the Hauraki Gulf Forum
Paywalled so I can only read the first line but I have also noticed lots of young snapper washed up on Whangaparaoa peninsula, apparently starving. So many people enjoyed seeing and interacting with whales and dolphins in the gulf this summer but where is the concern for their wellbeing?
I came across a set net in the Waitemata that had only been set 10 minutes before I got there and it already had 6 young snapper in it. Investigating the rules suggests it’s legal to do. Literally legal to kill juvenile fish is a nusury zone. The fishing lobby needs to be keel hauled.
Less talk more action.

What might the Hauraki Gulf look like in in 150 years time? What might you see if you dive under the water? It will be dead
The NZ government have let EVERY SINGLE New Zelander down by not getting on top of the weed that was only at Great Barrier in a few of the harbours during Covid. Had they acted in time (which they knew) they could have killed the noxious weed. Now it has spread out of control and will wipe out everything on the sea floor. Shame on them!
